The Kids Workshop at The Home Depot is educational, fun and completely free! In my opinion, this is one of the best events for kids and their parents. On the first Saturday of every month, participating Home Depot locations host The Kids Workshop.
Families with kids of all ages enjoy this event. The Home Depot does a great job organizing everything and providing the project kits, tools, and supplies. Best of all, on top of being free, they do all the clean up after you’re done! All you have to do is show up and bring your enthusiasm. Children receive their own Home Depot apron when they check-in. They are awarded a certificate of completion and a project pin when they finish their project.
Earlier this month was the sixth event that my son and I have attended so far. At the last workshop, our project was to build a tow truck. Some of the previous projects that my son completed were; building a windmill pot holder for Mother’s Day, building a car, making a picture box, putting together a reindeer and sleigh for Christmas, and making a fishing game.
Six Benefits of the Kids Workshop
1. Learn How to Follow Instructions
Children get to experience the importance of following instructions. The added benefit to this is that when a mistake is made, the child (and the parent) are forced to problem-solve.
2. Fine and Gross Motor Skills
Children get to practice using tools like hammers, screwdrivers, glue, and paintbrushes. These are excellent to help them develop their fine and gross motor skills.
3. Express Creativity
Decorating the project is as important as building the project itself. Kids enjoy using their imagination to paint their projects and show their individuality.
4. Focus & Independence
Keeping a child’s attention can be challenging. Concentrating on a project is an effective way to focus their attention. It’s an opportunity for them to work independently.
5. Family Bonding
We live in a world dominated by electronics, smartphones, and various other devices. The Kids Workshop can be a dedicated time for families to “unplug” and have fun together.
6. Sense of Accomplishment
The look on a child’s face when a project is completed says it all. You can see the pride they have for what they have created on their own or with their parents.
Final Thoughts
My son gets better and better working on projects each time we come to the Kids Workshop. I highly recommend this monthly event to any parent. Not only is it fun for your child, but it’ll be fun for you and the entire family.
After my son completed his tow truck, I spoke to Ryan, a Home Depot team member at the event and I asked him some general questions about the event. He shared that The Home Depot has worked with teachers to provide project kits for students. Teachers interested in learning more can inquire with their human resource manager.
The next Kids Workshop will be this weekend on Saturday, August 3, from 9 am to 12 noon. The scheduled project will be to build a rocket-shaped pencil box. Click the following link for more information and register online. https://www.homedepot.com/workshops
